Al-Ma’arij
The Ascending Stairways
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Bismillah hir rahman nir raheem
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
(١) سَأَلَ سَآئِلُۢ بِعَذَابٖ وَاقِعٖ
Sa’ala saaa’ilun bi ‘azaabinw waaqi’
(1) A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen
(٢) لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٞ
Lil kaafireena laisa lahoo daafi’
(2) To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.
(٣) مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِي ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ
Minal laahi zil ma’aarij
(3) [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent.
(٤) تَعۡرُجُ ٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيۡهِ فِي يَوۡمٖ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهُۥ خَمۡسِينَ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٖ
Ta’rujul malaaa’ikatu war Roohu ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoo khamseena alfa sanah
(4) The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.
(٥) فَٱصۡبِرۡ صَبۡرٗا جَمِيلًا
Fasbir sabran jameelaa
(5) So be patient with gracious patience.
(٦) إِنَّهُمۡ يَرَوۡنَهُۥ بَعِيدٗا
Inaahum yarawnahoo ba’eedaa
(6) Indeed, they see it [as] distant,
(٧) وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبٗا
Wa naraahu qareebaa
(7) But We see it [as] near.
(٨) يَوۡمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
Yawma takoonus samaaa’u kalmuhl
(8) On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,
(٩) وَتَكُونُ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ
Wa takoonul jibaalu kal’ihn
(9) And the mountains will be like wool,
(١٠) وَلَا يَسۡـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمٗا
Wa laa yas’alu hameemun hameemaa
(10) And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
(١١) يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ لَوۡ يَفۡتَدِي مِنۡ عَذَابِ يَوۡمِئِذِۭ بِبَنِيهِ
Yubassaroonahum; ya waddul mujrimu law yaftadee min ‘azaabi yawma’izim bibaneeh
(11) They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
(١٢) وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ
Wa saahibatihee wa akheeh
(12) And his wife and his brother
(١٣) وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِي تُـٔۡوِيهِ
Wa faseelathil latee tu’weeh
(13) And his nearest kindred who shelter him
(١٤) وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ
Wa man fil ardi jamee’an summa yunjeeh
(14) And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.
(١٥) كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ
Kallaa innahaa lazaa
(15) No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],
(١٦) نَزَّاعَةٗ لِّلشَّوَىٰ
Nazzaa’atal lishshawaa
(16) A remover of exteriors.
(١٧) تَدۡعُواْ مَنۡ أَدۡبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
Tad’oo man adbara wa tawallaa
(17) It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
(١٨) وَجَمَعَ فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ
Wa jama’a fa aw’aa
(18) And collected [wealth] and hoarded.
(١٩) ۞إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا
Innal insaana khuliqa haloo’aa
(19) Indeed, mankind was created anxious:
(٢٠) إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعٗا
Izaa massahush sharru jazoo’aa
(20) When evil touches him, impatient,
(٢١) وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوعًا
Wa izaa massahul khairu manoo’aa
(21) And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
(٢٢) إِلَّا ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ
Illal musalleen
(22) Except the observers of prayer –
(٢٣) ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُونَ
Allazeena hum ‘alaa Salaatihim daaa’imoon
(23) Those who are constant in their prayer
(٢٤) وَٱلَّذِينَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ
Wallazeena feee amwaalihim haqqun ma’loom
(24) And those within whose wealth is a known right
(٢٥) لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
Lissaaa ‘ili walmahroom
(25) For the petitioner and the deprived –
(٢٦) وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Wallazeena yusaddiqoona bi yawmid Deen
(26) And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
(٢٧) وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ
Wallazeena hum min ‘azaabi Rabbihim mushfiqoon
(27) And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord –
(٢٨) إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمۡ غَيۡرُ مَأۡمُونٖ
Inna ‘azaaba Rabbihim ghairu ma’ moon
(28) Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe –
(٢٩) وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ حَٰفِظُونَ
Wallazeena hum li furoojihim haafizoon
(29) And those who guard their private parts
(٣٠) إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ أَوۡ مَا مَلَكَتۡ أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ فَإِنَّهُمۡ غَيۡرُ مَلُومِينَ
Illaa ‘alaaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aymaanuhum fa innahum ghairu maloomeen
(30) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed –
(٣١) فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ
Famanib taghaa waraaa’a zaalika fa ulaaa’ika humul ‘aadoon
(31) But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors –
(٣٢) وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَٰعُونَ
Wallazeena hum li amaanaatihim wa ‘ahdihim raa’oon
(32) And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive
(٣٣) وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ قَآئِمُونَ
Wallazeena hum bi shahaadaatihim qaaa’imoon
(33) And those who are in their testimonies upright
(٣٤) وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمۡ يُحَافِظُونَ
Wallazeena hum ‘alaa salaatihim yuhaafizoon
(34) And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
(٣٥) أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ فِي جَنَّـٰتٖ مُّكۡرَمُونَ
Ulaaa’ika fee jannaatim mukramoon
(35) They will be in gardens, honored.
(٣٦) فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهۡطِعِينَ
Famaa lil lazeena kafaroo qibalaka muhti’een
(36) So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad],
(٣٦) عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ
‘Anil yameeni wa ‘anish shimaali ‘izeen
(37) [To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?
(٣٨) أَيَطۡمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُدۡخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٖ
Ayatma’u kullum ri’im minhum anyyudkhala jannata Na’eem
(38) Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
(٣٩) كَلَّآۖ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ
Kallaaa innaa khalaq nahum mimmaa ya’lamoon
(39) No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.
(٤٠) فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَٰدِرُونَ
Falaaa uqsimu bi Rabbil mashaariqi wal maghaaribi innaa laqaadiroon
(40) So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able
(٤١) عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
‘Alaaa an nubaddila khairan minhum wa maa nahnu bi masbooqeen
(41) To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
(٤٢) فَذَرۡهُمۡ يَخُوضُواْ وَيَلۡعَبُواْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَٰقُواْ يَوۡمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
Fazarhum yakhoodoo wa yal’aboo hattaa yulaaqoo yawma humul lazee yoo’adoon
(42) So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised –
(٤٣) يَوۡمَ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ سِرَاعٗا كَأَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٖ يُوفِضُونَ
Yawma yakhrujoona minal ajdaasi siraa’an ka anna hum ilaa nusubiny yoofidoon
(43) The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.
(٤٤) خَٰشِعَةً أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ ذِلَّةٞۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمُ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ
Khaashi’atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillah; zaalikal yawmul lazee kaanoo yoo’adoon
(44) Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
