As-Saffat

Those Who Set the Ranks

Bismillah hir rahman nir raheem

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

Wassaaaffaati saffaa

(1) By those [angels] lined up in rows

Fazzaajiraati zajraa

(2) And those who drive [the clouds]

Fattaaliyaati Zikra

(3) And those who recite the message,

Inna Illaahakum la Waahid

(4) Indeed, your God is One,

Rabbus samaawaati wal ardi wa maa bainahumaa wa Rabbul mashaariq

(5) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.

Innaa zaiyannas samaaa ‘ad dunyaa bizeenatinil kawaakib

(6) Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

Wa hifzam min kulli Shaitaanim maarid

(7) And as protection against every rebellious devil

Laa yassamma ‘oona ilal mala ‘il a’alaa wa yuqzafoona min kulli jaanib

(8) [So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,

Duhooranw wa lahum ‘azaabunw waasib

(9) Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

Illaa man khatifal khatfata fa atba’ahoo shihaabun saaqib

(10) Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

Fastaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnaa; innaa khalaqnaahum min teenil laazib

(11) Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], “Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?” Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.

Bal’ajibta wa yaskharoon

(12) But you wonder, while they mock,

Wa izaa zukkiroo laa yazkuroon

(13) And when they are reminded, they remember not.

Wa izaa ra aw Aayatany yastaskhiroon

(14) And when they see a sign, they ridicule

Wa qaalooo in haazaa illaa sihrum mubeen

(15) And say, “This is not but obvious magic.

‘A-izaa mitnaa wa kunnaa turaabanw wa ‘izaaman ‘a innaa lamab’oosoon

(16) When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

Awa aabaa’unal awwaloon

(17) And our forefathers [as well]?”

Qul na’am wa antum daakhiroon

(18) Say, “Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible.”

Fa innamaa hiya zajra tunw waahidatun fa izaa hum yanzuroon

(19) It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

Wa qaaloo yaa wailanaa haazaa Yawmud-Deen

(20) They will say, “O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense.”

Haazaa Yawmul Faslil lazee kuntum bihee tukaziboon (section 1)

(21) [They will be told], “This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny.”

(22) [The angels will be ordered], “Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship

Min doonil laahi fahdoohum ilaa siraatil Jaheem

(23) Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

Wa qifoohum innahum mas’ooloon

(24) And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned.”

Maa lakum laa tanaasaroon

(25) [They will be asked], “What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?”

Bal humul Yawma mustaslimoon

(26) But they, that Day, are in surrender.

Wa aqbala ba’duhum ‘alaa ba’diny yatasaaa’aloon

(27) And they will approach one another blaming each other.

Qaalooo innakum kuntum taatoonanaa ‘anil yameen

(28) They will say, “Indeed, you used to come at us from the right.”

Qaaloo bal lam takoonoo mu’mineen

(29) The oppressors will say, “Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

Wa maa kaana lanaa ‘alaikum min sultaanim bal kuntum qawman taagheen

(30) And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

Fahaqqa ‘alainaa qawlu Rabbinaaa innaa lazaaa’iqoon

(31) So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

Fa aghwainaakum innaa kunnaa ghaaween

(32) And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators.”

Fa innahum Yawma’izin fil’azaabi mushtarikoon

(33) So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

Innaa kazaalika naf’alu bil mujrimeen

(34) Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

Innahum kaanooo izaa qeela lahum laaa ilaaha illal laahu yastakbiroon

(35) Indeed they, when it was said to them, “There is no deity but Allah,” were arrogant

Wa yaqooloona a’innaa lataarikooo aalihatinaa lishaa’irim majnoon

(36) And were saying, “Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?”

bal jaaa’a bilhaqqi wa saddaqal mursaleen

(37) Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

Innakum lazaaa’iqul ‘azaabil aleem

(38) Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

Wa maa tujzawna illaa maa kuntum ta’maloon

(39) And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do –

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

(40) But not the chosen servants of Allah.

Ulaaa’ika lahum rizqum ma’loom

(41) Those will have a provision determined –

Fa waakihu wa hum mukramoon

(42) Fruits; and they will be honored

Fee jannaatin Na’eem

(43) In gardens of pleasure

‘Alaa sururim mutaqaa bileen

(44) On thrones facing one another.

Yutaafu ‘alaihim bikaasim mim ma’een

(45) There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

Baidaaa’a laz zatil lish shaaribeen

(46) White and delicious to the drinkers;

Laa feehaa ghawlunw wa laa hum ‘anhaa yunzafoon

(47) No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

Wa ‘indahum qaasiraatut tarfi ‘een

(48) And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes,

Ka annahunna baidum maknoon

(49) As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

Fa aqbala ba’duhum ‘alaa badiny yatasaaa ‘aloon

(50) And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

Qaala qaaa’ilum minhum innee kaana lee qareen

(51) A speaker among them will say, “Indeed, I had a companion [on earth]

Yaqoolu ‘a innaka laminal musaddiqeen

(52) Who would say, ‘Are you indeed of those who believe

‘A-izaa mitnaa wa kunnaa turaabanw wa ‘izaaman ‘a innaa lamadeenoon

(53) That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?’”

Qaala hal antum muttali’oon

(54) He will say, “Would you [care to] look?”

Fattala’a fara aahu fee sawaaa’il Jaheem

(55) And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire.

Qaala tallaahi in kitta laturdeen

(56) He will say, “By Allah, you almost ruined me.

(57) If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

Afamaa nahnu bimaiyiteen

(58) Then, are we not to die

Illa mawtatanal oola wa maa nahnu bimu’azzabeen

(59) Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?”

Inna haazaa lahuwal fawzul ‘azeem

(60) Indeed, this is the great attainment.

Limisli haaza falya’ma lil ‘aamiloon

(61) For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

Azaalika khairun nuzulan am shajaratuz Zaqqoom

(62) Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum?

Innaa ja’alnaahaa fitnatal lizzaalimeen

(63) Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

Innahaa shajaratun takhruju feee aslil Jaheem

(64) Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

Tal’uhaa ka annahoo ru’oosush Shayaateen

(65) Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

Fa innahum la aakiloona minhaa famaali’oona minhal butoon

(66) And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

Summa inna lahum ‘alaihaa lashawbam min hameem

(67) Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

Summa inna marji’ahum la ilal Jaheem

(68) Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

Innahum alfaw aabaaa’ahum daaalleen

(69) Indeed they found their fathers astray.

Fahum ‘alaa aasaarihim yuhra’oon

(70) So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

Wa laqad dalla qablahum aksarul awwaleen

(71) And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

Wa laqad arsalnaa feehim munzireen

(72) And We had already sent among them warners.

Fanzur kaifa kaana ‘aaqibatul munzareen

(73) Then look how was the end of those who were warned –

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen (section 2)

(74) But not the chosen servants of Allah.

Wa laqad naadaanaa Noohun falani’mal mujeeboon

(75) And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

Wa najjainaahu wa ahlahoo minal karbil ‘azeem

(76) And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

Wa ja’alnaa zurriyyatahoo hummul baaqeen

(77) And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen

(78) And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Salaamun ‘alaa Noohin fil ‘aalameen

(79) “Peace upon Noah among the worlds.”

Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

(80) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innahoo min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

(81) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Summa aghraqnal aakhareen

(82) Then We drowned the disbelievers.

Wa inna min shee’atihee la Ibraaheem

(83) And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

Iz jaaa’a Rabbahoo bi qalbin saleem

(84) When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

Iz qaala li abeehi wa qawmihee maazaa ta’budoon

(85) [And] when he said to his father and his people, “What do you worship?

A’ifkan aalihatan doonal laahi tureedoon

(86) Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allah you desire?

Famaa zannukum bi Rabbil’aalameen

(87) Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?”

Fanazara nazratan finnujoom

(88) And he cast a look at the stars

Faqaala innee saqeem

(89) And said, “Indeed, I am [about to be] ill.”

Fatawallaw ‘anhu mudbireen

(90) So they turned away from him, departing.

Faraagha ilaaa aalihatihim faqaala alaa taakuloon

(91) Then he turned to their gods and said, “Do you not eat?

Maa lakum laa tantiqoon

(92) What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?”

Faraagha ‘alaihim darbam bilyameen

(93) And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

Fa aqbalooo ilaihi yaziffoon

(94) Then the people came toward him, hastening.

Qaala ata’budoona maa tanhitoon

(95) He said, “Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

Wallaahu khalaqakum wa maa ta’maloon

(96) While Allah created you and that which you do?”

Qaalub noo lahoo bun yaanan fa alqoohu fil jaheem

(97) They said, “Construct for him a furnace and throw him into the burning fire.”

Fa araadoo bihee kaidan faja ‘alnaahumul asfaleen

(98) And they intended for him a plan, but We made them the most debased.

Wa qaala innee zaahibun ilaa Rabbee sa yahdeen

(99) And [then] he said, “Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen

(100) My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.”

Fabashsharnaahu bighulaamin haleem

(101) So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

Falamma balagha ma’a hus sa’ya qaala yaa buniya inneee araa fil manaami anneee azbahuka fanzur maazaa taraa; qaala yaaa abatif ‘al maa tu’maru satajidunee in shaaa’allaahu minas saabireen

(102) And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.” He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.”

Falammaaa aslamaa wa tallahoo liljabeen

(103) And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,

Wa naadainaahu ai yaaaa Ibraheem

(104) We called to him, “O Abraham,

Qad saddaqtar ru’yaa; innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

(105) You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Inna haazaa lahuwal balaaa’ul mubeen

(106) Indeed, this was the clear trial.

Wa fadainaahu bizibhin ‘azeem

(107) And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen

(108) And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Salaamun ‘alaaa Ibraaheem

(109) “Peace upon Abraham.”

Kazaalika najzil muhsineen

(110) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innahoo min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

(111) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Wa bashsharnaahu bi Ishaaqa Nabiyam minas saaliheen

(112) And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

Wa baaraknaa ‘alaihi wa ‘alaaa Ishaaq; wa min zurriyya tihimaa muhsinunw wa zaalimul linafsihee mubeen (section 3)

(113) And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself.

Wa laqad mananna alaa Moosaa wa Haaroon

(114) And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

Wa najjainaahumaa wa qawmahumaa minal karbil ‘azeem

(115) And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

Wa nasarnaahum fakaanoo humul ghaalibeen

(116) And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

Wa aatainaahumal Kitaabal mustabeen

(117) And We gave them the explicit Scripture,

Wa hadainaahumus Siraatal Mustaqeem

(118) And We guided them on the straight path.

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihimaa fil aakhireen/p>

(119) And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:

Salaamun ‘alaa Moosaa wa Haaroon

(120) “Peace upon Moses and Aaron.”

Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

(121) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innahumaa min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

(122) Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

Wa inna Ilyaasa laminal mursaleen

(123) And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

Iz qaala liqawmiheee alaa tattaqoon

(124) When he said to his people, “Will you not fear Allah?

Atad’oona Ba’lanw wa tazaroona ahsanal khaaliqeen

(125) Do you call upon Ba’l and leave the best of creators –

Allaaha Rabbakum wa Rabba aabaaa’ikumul awwaleen

(126) Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?”

Fakazzaboohu fa inna hum lamuhdaroon

(127) And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

(128) Except the chosen servants of Allah.

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen

(129) And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Salaamun ‘alaaa Ilyaaseen

(130) “Peace upon Elias.”

Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

(131) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innahoo min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

(132) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Wa inna Lootal laminal mursaleen

(133) And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

Iz najjainaahu wa ahlahooo ajma’een

(134) [So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,

Illaa ‘ajoozan fil ghaabireen

(135) Except his wife among those who remained [with the evildoers].

Summa dammarnal aakhareen

(136) Then We destroyed the others.

Wa innakum latamurroona ‘alaihim musbiheen

(137) And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

Wa billail; afalaa ta’qiloon (section 4)

(138) And at night. Then will you not use reason?

Wa inna Yoonusa laminal mursaleen

(139) And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

Iz abaqa ilal fulkil mash hoon

(140) [Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

Fasaahama fakaana minal mudhadeen

(141) And he drew lots and was among the losers.

Faltaqamahul hootu wa huwa muleem

(142) Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.

Falaw laaa annahoo kaana minal musabbiheen

(143) And had he not been of those who exalt Allah,

Lalabisa fee batniheee ilaa Yawmi yub’asoon

(144) He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.

Fanabaznaahu bil’araaa’i wa huwa saqeem

(145) But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

Wa ambatnaa ‘alaihi shajaratam mai yaqteen

(146) And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.

Wa arsalnaahu ilaa mi’ati alfin aw yazeedoon

(147) And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

Fa aamanoo famatta’ naahum ilaa heen

(148) And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

Fastaftihim ali Rabbikal banaatu wa lahumul banoon

(149) So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], “Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?

Am khalaqnal malaaa’i kata inaasanw wa hum shaahidoon

(150) Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?”

Alaaa innahum min ifkihim la yaqooloon

(151) Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,

Waladal laahu wa innahum lakaaziboon

(152) ” Allah has begotten,” and indeed, they are liars.

Astafal banaati ‘alal baneen

(153) Has He chosen daughters over sons?

Maa lakum kaifa tahkumoon

(154) What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

Afalaa tazakkaroon

(155) Then will you not be reminded?

Am lakum sultaanum mubeen

(156) Or do you have a clear authority?

Faatoo bi Kitaabikum in kuntum saadiqeen

(157) Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

Wa ja’aloo bainahoo wa bainal jinnati nasabaa; wa laqad ‘alimatil jinnatu innahum lamuhdaroon

(158) And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment].

Subhaanal laahi ‘ammaa yasifoon

(159) Exalted is Allah above what they describe,

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

(160) Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin].

Fa innakum wa maa ta’budoon

(161) So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

Maaa antum ‘alaihi bi faaatineen

(162) You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

Illaa man huwa saalil jaheem

(163) Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.

Wa maa minnaaa illaa lahoo maqaamun ma’loom

(164) [The angels say], “There is not among us any except that he has a known position.

Wa innaa lanah nus saaffoon

(165) And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

Wa innaa lanah nul musabbihoon

(166) And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah.”

Wa in kaanoo la yaqooloon

(167) And indeed, the disbelievers used to say,

Law anna ‘indanaa zikram minal awwaleen

(168) “If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

Lakunna ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

(169) We would have been the chosen servants of Allah.”

Fakafaroo bihee fasawfa ya’lamoon

(170) But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know.

Wa laqad sabaqat Kalimatunaa li’ibaadinal mursa leen

(171) And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

Innaa hum lahumul mansooroon

(172) [That] indeed, they would be those given victory

Wa inna jundana lahumul ghaaliboon

(173) And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome.

Fatawalla ‘anhum hatta heen

(174) So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time.

Wa absirhum fasawfa yubsiroon

(175) And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

Afabi’azaabinaa yasta’jiloon

(176) Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

Fa izaa nazala bisaahatihim fasaaa’a sabaahul munzareen

(177) But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

Wa tawalla ‘anhum hattaa heen

(178) And leave them for a time.

Wa absir fasawfa yubsiroon

(179) And see, for they are going to see.

Subhaana Rabbika Rabbil ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon

(180) Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

Wa salaamun ‘alalmursaleen

(181) And peace upon the messengers.

Walhamdu lillaahi Rabbil ‘aalameen (section 5)

(182) And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
